Here he is, in Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado, doing coursework toward graduation next December. This is a class he's taking, mapping various points and more stuff I don't understand. He's also having a great deal of fun.

Without his computer and/or laptop, Steve has been sending email using his phone and his pictures have been posted on Facebook.

Dog Days

I'm not saying you wouldn't believe me, but it is 110 degrees Fahrenheit here, and I screen-shot my little Weather Channel icon to show you, also to mark the moment, so I can see it when it's twenty-below zero next January.

There is nothing to do in weather like this, nobody is even driving anywhere....hardly. I went to CVS and the only people there were a very elderly couple I saw getting out of their car; I thought: why? What's so important? You're in your nineties, for crying out loud, and it's one-hundred and ten freaking degrees out here!

But maybe they needed their heart medication or something, I can't know.

At any rate, I found this vintage Kool-Aid ad and I love it, it reminds me how I'd choose Kool-Aid packets according to color, when I was about six or seven years old.

Purple was always good, as was orange. Green was never great, but the package was so pretty. I know that Kool-Aid was flavored sugar water, very sugared water, but damn it was good back then.

And I did find something wonderful on this very hot day. I watch a lot of YouTube, or at least I have it on while I'm on the internet, and this little movie just warmed my heart. As if my heart needed that.

"An Apartment For Peggy" sounds lame, but I've watched tons of old movies on YouTube and this one is a keeper. It's so good! If anything, watch the first two minutes or so to hear the college students singing their alma mater.

Here's the movie in a playlist, I saved it as such but did not upload it; USAMatinee11 did the posting of the movie. For more about the 1948 flick starring Jeanne Crain and William Holden and Edmund Gwenn, you can read the IMDb review here, but IMDb doesn't do it justice.

Steven is hoping for an amazing internship that goes from January through May of 2012, right after he graduates. I don't know a whole lot about it, and he describes it as "kind of hazy at this time", but it's at the Goddard Space Center in Maryland. In other words: NASA.

Would that not be so cool?

Here's the area where he'd be working and I do so love a road called "Good Luck."

And here's how far he'd be from home. Actually, I have no doubt that he'll get the position, and that he'll accept it.

So my baby will be literally a half a continent away.

He'll get official word in October, which doesn't give him much time to prepare, but he's a mellow kind of guy about traversing the globe.

Vintage ads that amaze me

The "strict accordance with the new U. S. law" makes me wonder: what was the old law? We have laws for dentures? And $9.95 is a great price in any year! I guess you bite down on something and voila! they make these beautiful chompers that look perfectly natural in your mouth.

But most amazing: East St. Louis used to be in Illinois. Wonder what happened with that.

Oh, the smoking Nazis have to hate this simple fact: there was a time when it was not only okay to smoke, but recommended for your health! I gazed at this for a solid minute, imagining fifty cents for a pack of cigarettes.

I was born in the wrong era, I have always known this.

I have heard of "piles", I've spent time with the elderly. But using rectal "cones" as a cure is new to me, and apparently defunct. But with Ungentine, you know it must've been good.

What happened to calling those drugstore guys "druggists"? I love that. Druggist. That's what they are: drug dealers who actually get paid legally.

By the way: I totally respect pharmacists. I do.

Oh, there is so much wrong with this photo of a small statue with a plaque that reads "Jesus Is My Coach". And there are worse offerings at the place I found this one.

Here are some issues I have:

Jesus did not know how to play golf.
Jesus should not be hanging out with little children, he's got that crazy hair, a wild look in his eye and that gown, that gown, oh man.
Jesus as a coach would not be fair to competitors.
Jesus does not appear focused on the task at hand. I worry about that little girl. But maybe He won't....oh well.

Is this what Jesus is going to do when He "comes back" as per some religions?

If so, I'm going to stop worry about Commandments and just learn golf.

When it comes to retro, it doesn’t get any better than James Lileks and his incredibly vast website.

Hotels, interior desecrations, “ghost” signs, regrettable foods, a whole site of vintage photos on Tumblr and on it goes. I have spent hours on this site and I’m still not tired of it. I’ve also bought the books and they are well worth it.

For something a bit quicker but every bit as funny, Candyboots and her alarming Weight Watchers recipe cards from 1974 are just the thing. You’ll still lose time, but not as much.

If I’d only known how popular retro would be, and how much I’d love it, I’d have kept everything!

Ah, the old Etch-a-Sketch. So much fun! Made mostly of lead and asbestos, those toys of the sixties have been relegated to various hazardous waste landfills and the new safety-assured games are somehow...different.

But you can Etch-a-Sketch online! This site is fun, you use your arrow keys to guide the drawing.

I'm sure you'll make great creations on the site; if you don't, you might find this version of Etch-a-Sketch a bit more user friendly.

If you're more in a painting type of mood and you have a good hand for freestyle drawing on your computer, this website is ideal.

As you can see, I do not find it easy. That "painting" took me four tries, and then I just got sick of it and called it good.

I probably could've done better than this.

That's right.

For the ultimate in an online painting or drawing experience, you've got to visit this inclusive website.

I was actually able to draw a dog! Do not use that image I drew, I am copyrighting it! I warn you!

Spring Reading: Reruns!

	Hearts In Atlantis by Stephen King I have read all of Stephen King's books and this is not his typical fare. Set during the fifties, sixties and onward, at the center of the book are college kids who get entwined in the card game called Hearts while Vietnam, civil rights and the world swirls around them. This book is probably the most powerful "I was there" book about the Vietnam era that I have ever read and it is not only my favorite Stephen King book, it's one of my Top Ten Favorite Books Of All Time by anyone.
	Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain I love to read about other peoples' jobs, but I've pretty much stayed with the medical profession. I'm pretty sure I could do minor neurosurgery after some of the books I've read. But Bourdain's book is the life of a sous chef and it is oddly engrossing for me. I say "oddly" because I make toast and pudding with great ease; everything else requires a lot of cutlery, many bowls, electrical equipment, a full recipe (illustrated) and the family First Aid Kit. This book is also about managing staff, disgruntled customers and life in general.
	The Broken Cord by Michael Dorris As a graduate student, Michael Dorris adopted a Native American baby who, it soon became apparent, was cognitively impaired. As the years passed, Dorris realized that his son was the victim of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, one of the few terrible and 100% preventable birth defects. FAS is the direct result of a pregnant woman's alcohol consumption during pregnancy. Since the publication of this book, Dorris divorced/was divorced by his wife, the acclaimed author Louise Erdrich, the son was hit by a car and killed and ultimately, Dorris committed suicide, alone, in a rented hotel room. Maybe that last paragraph was a spoiler but this book burns to the core for any parent, caregiver or protector of children. I recommend it to all of my students and I recommend it to you.
	Seinlanguage by Jerry Seinfeld A combo of various stand-up routines and things I'd not heard from Seinfeld before, this book is one of my true treasures. It's written in short paragraphs so that I can pick it up, read a page or even half a page, and before I know it, I'm laughing. When my father was in the hospital, dying, I read this book aloud to him. Before long, nurses, doctors and other hospital personnel were picking it up when they came into Dad's room, reading the odd paragraph here or there, and they all left smiling. I thought this book would be a sad reminder to me after Dad died, but it's not. It's still funnier than hell and Seinfeld owes me money because I'm pretty sure that at least fifty people ended up buying this book just from seeing it in my father's room.
	A Prayer For Owen Meany by John Irving This book took my breath away. Like Hearts In Atlantis above, it thematically very much follows the conflict in Vietnam. But it's also funny...a comedy of errors and accidents that, ultimately, lead to the mind-blowing conclusion. This is a book that stayed with me for weeks; I would awaken thinking about it. For a long time I felt it was a book of loss and sadness, but I finally saw what Irving wrote: a book of hope. This book is...and I use this term very guardedly with any written material....perfect.

Okay, I'm addicted. I played this game once and decided it wasn't for me. Then I started craving it, and I couldn't remember the name. When I found it again, I just couldn't stop!

Yes, it reminds me of my PibbExtra days except that this won't cause tooth decay. It's an easy concept but it

gets harder as the levels progress. I like to play it on the creator's own website; it's big so I use the CTRL+ mouse scroll to shrink it a bit.

When and if you get addicted, there are various YouTube videos to show you how to complete the levels.

Even if you lack a sweet tooth...enjoy!

I had a year or so when I loved to play Scrabble online. I had a group of regular opponents and I kept a list of their names by my computer: Eric was a new dad in Canada, Dave was an architect in New York and Dan was a musician in California, Conroy was this incredibly brilliant kid at Georgia Tech who could not seem to keep a girlfriend. There were others, I remember them fondly. I could always count on one of them to be available for a game.

Then the site where we played went bust, I

think Hasbro pulled it because Hasbro is very guarded with their copyright of Scrabble. But there is still a place to play the real Scrabble with the real rules. I have long since lost my dear opponents, so I play against the computer (who doesn't cheat or chat). You can also play against real people, if you're that type of Scrabble player.

I love calendars. Probably because I am always late, I always forget appointments and it's a rare day when I pay a bill on time. I have dozens of calendars, both online and printed.

This calendar is great. You just enter the month and year and choose a picture (if you want one). You can change the settings to type in your appointments, bill payment due dates and whatever else clutters your life. The calendar can remain online for you to work with or you can print it and tape it up on the cabinet in the kitchen where nobody else will look at it, either.

Or go simpler with these free printable calendars for each month; you can print them vertically ("portrait") or horizontally ("landscape"); you can alter the size and there are many designs to choose from.

When I was a teenager, the Mall was our big hangout and the record area (it was not a separate store, just a kind of nook) at Penney's was a big draw.

Which leads me to this:

Had we seen Mr. Hook Hand here on one of the album covers, we'd have fainted. There is nothing, nothing, scarier than a Hookman story. And Hookman stories were, as it happens, also a major part of my teenaged years.

Most people today get prosthetic devices that are barely distinguishable from the real thing...but this album is from the sixties, maybe they didn't have fake hands then.
Or....maybe this guy is capitalizing on his handicap! Did you ever think of that? Huh?

Okay, this gal has no hands, that's her banner, that's how she's getting gigs.

It does not say she's a good organist, only that she has no hands.

Unless she's punching out Chopin concertos, I don't get what the deal is. Pretty much any handless person could bang around on a keyboard with their stumps.

I'd like to know more about where her hands actually are. Was she in an accident? Did her mother take thalidomide? Can she wipe her own butt?

She appears to be sort of grimacing in the photo. This could be a cue that she lost her hands IN the organ or maybe it's just a trick of light.

Or maybe it hurts like hell to play the organ with your poor blistered stumps! Maybe she fucking hates it!

I was going to address the "miracle of God" thing but this makes me feel kind of sick; however, what is it here that they're calling a miracle of God? That the gal has no hands? That she can play the organ?

I'll tell you what a miracle would be:

I'm not terribly concerned what religion you are or are not; I'm pretty sure the various Higher Powers don't care either so long as you've found a spiritual home within yourself.

"An Introduction To Buddhism" has a lot of valuable information. It's pretty black-and-white because unlike me, the Buddhists apparently think you do have to follow certain teachings and rules to get to a better place when you leave this earth. And frankly, according to their teachings? I'm freaking doomed.

Probably you are, too, unless you're a practicing Buddhist.

At any rate, there's good solid advice and learning in this one.

The Cuban Missile Crisis

I remember my father talking about the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was on a week's vacation to paint our old house in central Topeka and while high on a ladder painting the outer attic trim, he listened as the world began to end.

He crawled off the ladder and went to Macy's and bought my mother a cashmere sweater he knew she craved.

They were young, they had no money, but my father wanted Mom to have this one last thing.

As it turns out, they went hungry for two weeks, but they did it alive. And I still have that cashmere sweater, so that I will never forget what I can't remember.

Anyone who is owned by a dog has seen this scenario in one form or another. My dog is too small to pull off this maneuver but I have simply got to give snaps to the dog in the picture for creativity.

In studying this picture, I got to looking at the cat on the woman's lap. I wonder if he's thinking, "Dude. Settle down. You're being totally undignified, you're a freaking embarrassment" or, instead, "Whoa, kewl, how can I pull that off?"

I know what the dog is thinking, we all know what the dog is thinking.

My father was born in Chilocothe, Missouri on October 3, 1938. He'd be 72 years old today, but he died of lung cancer on November 12, 1995 at the age of 57.

This is one of my favorite pictures of us. I think it had to have been in about October of 1986. We so often sat like that, me telling Dad something he just had to know.

I miss that.

Feeling crafty? Me either.

However, I was really into origami at one time, making amazing things from paper only: no glue, tape or staples. My son caught on and made strings covered with origami doves and hung them all over his room, it was kind of a new-age hippie thing.
Here's a blog on doing origami with fabric and it's fascinating. Even if you don't do any of it, it's fun to see and actually, some of the fabric can be copied from the blog and used for backgrounds on your own blogs and websites.

On the left is my mother, on the right is her sister, Judith ("Judi"). I found this photo in my household archives (ha) and it just stunned me for a few moments for a number of reasons, but let's keep this light. I think the white spot is from where tape got on it...I had never seen this particular picture; it was in my mother's things.

I think this photo tells us three major things that are worth knowing and remembering.

1. My mother had some totally groovy tops.

2. My Aunt Judi was prepared for a solar flare from 1963-1965 because she wore those sunglasses on her head for the entirety of those two years, I swear she did. I thought it was the ultimate in glamor but I could barely talk yet.

3. Sisterhood is eternal. And this photo is proof.

I found an awesome website, well-done, easy to navigate and full of information. It reviews the fifties and sixties from television and radio to fashion, movies, hair, cars, dances....and there are links galore for clipart, shopping and other retro sites.

I spent hours enjoying this one.

Tables are the easiest and neatest way to organize your blog or website. Here's a very handy table creator; just put in the number of columns and rows you want and you'll get the HTML to put on your site. It might take some playing around with it to make it work for you....but once I learned it, I put it on my bookmark bar and I use it a lot.

If you're really into wasting some time today, try making a human calendar! It's very...interesting. And it should kill a few minutes for you.

Here's hoping this site doesn't cost you more than a few seconds. If you're messing with it after more than a minute, you just don't get it. Take it from someone who went on and on and on.

Do you like to chat online? With ibots? And the rude ones, do you like them? Then you will love Peter, who's a real bastard! And here's another chat bot that's really rather clever, and it even knows it's clever.

It's fine to create a really depressing blog, and it's especially savvy to publish it as white type on a huge black background. Nobody can doubt how sad you are then! Then again, some other depressing blog might be oddly compelling for ChewMouse, like this one was.

Maybe you'd like to go play with the boob ladies. After that gets old, find yourself a wife quite easily. And make sure she's a good one.

Excellent Color Scheming Tool

This wonderful site offers a lot more than color help for bloggers, but colors are my issue. I never can remember the Hex numbers and my printer won't give me a nice desktop chart...besides, sometimes I like to browse colors.

On the function below, you can either enter the Hex number and find out what color it is, or you can click on a color you like and to the right boxes will appear with the color you found on the wheel and three analogous colors.

Here I clicked on the color purple on the wheel and got this:

Now I have several Hex numbers I can use, or I can try again.

If you see a Hex number on your blog's template and have no idea what color it is, simply enter the six-character alpha-numeric code in the box, click on "update" and you'll have it!

Another handy function on the same page allows you to move a slider around until you find the color you want. You'll be given the RGB numbers as well as the Hex code.

In the case below, I chose blue:

I love that color and now I know that the RGB numbers are 127, 185, 255 and the Hex code is #7FB9FF.

Okay. We've got a bunch of people that believe that when the "apocalypse" happens, they're going to be torn from whatever they're doing and yanked right on up into Heaven to party with Jesus, who can make wine from water just by the way. But what of their pets??? Never fear: the fine folks at Jesus Pets are going to line up Muslims, Jews and other non-Christians to take care of your cats and dogs. (I have to admit...my favorite is on the contract page where non-Christians have to agree not to have sex with animals [quite fair] and also not to eat them; and, as the contract reads, this includes goldfish! )

I have only this to say: if the Apocalypse happens, my dogs, cats and whomever else shares my life is going with me....or I'm just staying put like all of you.

This site gives me the creeps so badly that I'm saying just go look at it if you want, I don't want to discuss it.

By the way, before anybody gets all up in arms, I got this lovely little "LOL Jesus" clipart right off the site itself.

And you know...perhaps that is creepiest of all.

This one was my favorite; it just revs up my taste buds to see it here. That meatloaf was pretty good and you could take the ketchupy sauce and put it over the tater tots and some of the sauce always got on the brownie, which to this day makes me, sometimes, want to put a little ketchup on any piece of cake, something I could not explain until now.

The green beans were terrible. Very hard to chew. But I ate them, too, because you just did with a TV dinner.

These have been ruined now. They probably removed all the hazardous chemicals and dyes, because the healthy choices available in frozen foods are just that: healthy choices of stuff you should be cooking yourself.

TV dinners were what they said. A frozen dinner that you made because you were busy, man. Busy watching TV, which was also a better deal back then. Even if we had only three channels.

Sigh.

Making music online

Here's a way to play virtual piano online; it's easier if you know music but you'll figure it out either way. Apparently most people use it to play Christmas carols and that's okay because it doesn't take much to go from "Jingle Bells" to "Found A Peanut".

I have to admit, my favorite way to make online Christmas carols remains Zefrank's carol maker his sequencer and I also love .
