The Shining

Released on May 23, 1980.

There are some incredible images and a lot of information on The Overlook Hotel website; one of my favorites is Stanley Kubrick's personal copy of Stephen King's original book with Kubrick's own notes in the margins. And a continuity picture of little Danny wearing his Apollo sweater.
There's an intriguing 2012 film (if you're into "The Shining", that is) called "Room 237" and you can watch it on Viooz here. It delves into some of the mysteries about the layout of The Overlook.

Stephen King published a sequel to The Shining late last year; Dr. Sleep does not follow Kubrick's storyline, but King's own instead. I loved the book and had at least as many nightmares from reading it as I did with The Shining.

While I'm at all-time favorite Stephen King novel is Hearts In Atlantis, which I've written about before on this blog, but it's not scary scary.

The scariest of all of King's novels, in my opinion, is Pet Sematary. I got it the year it came out, for Christmas, and stayed up all night reading it. Everyone was in bed and I was frozen in a chair in the family room, continuing to read. I could barely bring my head out of it when everyone got up to celebrate Christmas morning. And that's the sure sign of a good book!
